Airfix Model Kit

Remember when you received your first airfix model kit? For many of us a simple childhood pleasure soon develops into a full-blown hobby - some might even call it an addiction! I remember receiving my first Airfix Model Kit, complete with a set of paints so that I could paint the newly packaged Spitfire in realistic colours, representing one of the world's greatest flying machines at the height of its fame.

The humble Airfix Model Kit has developed enormously since the early days. Collections can still include the old favourites, such as Second World War aircraft, warships and cars, but the range has grown with each year. The toy soldier sets remain popular, whether simply to be used as toys or for recreating famous battles of the past.

Available figures include various World War II infantry units, as well as soldiers from different conflicts in time, including ever-popular 19th century American cavalry units. Many of us choose to specialise in particular areas, whether that means historic periods or simply types of collection. Fortunately, there is also another Airfix Model Kit looming on the horizon, ensuring that this is a hobby that continues to endure.

How will modelling continue to develop in the future? I suspect that we'll continue to see the range increasing, as creating models from kit form retains the interest of so many. Unlike some other hobbies, making use of an Airfix Model Kit is about much more than simply owning a collection. There's the real sense of achievement involved in building the models and painting them to create as much realism as possible.

Indeed, the art of painting the model kits is a real skill in itself. It may only take a few minutes to learn but it can take a long time to completely master. Most of us feel that we still have some way to go to perfect our techniques. Modelling also leads to wanting to find out more about the subjects involved. Many of us find ourselves doing a lot of background reading about the subject areas, finding out the history behind what we're attempting to recreate.

An Airfix Model Kit was exciting the first time that I saw one. Fortunately, the excitement and interest continue to endure.
