Model Trains
There's something about the world of model trains that seems to bring back memories of childhood for many of us. Although many go on to collect model trains into adulthood, the thrill of building and operating a model railway never seems to subside.
The ultimate model trains adventure is arguably to be found at Northlandz in Flemington, New Jersey. With some 8 miles of track and more than 300 bridges, it makes claim to be the largest model railway anywhere in the world today although this feat is also claimed by a layout in Hamburg, Germany (known as the Miniatur Wunderland).
Such is the popularity of model trains that there are still a number of popular magazines and journals dedicated to the subject, with some of the best known publications including the likes of Model Railroader Magazine and Rail Model Journal.
Why is it that model trains remain so popular? I think it's a combination of the engineering that is so faithfully replicated, as well as the ability to use one's own creativity to create (or re-create) suitable scenes and landscapes in which to enjoy model trains.
